On December 17th, renowned Northampton noise-pop trio The True Jacqueline will release a five song EP titled Like Way Out. Recorded on lo-fi 8-track tape and produced by sonic wizard Jeff Patlingrao (Orca Age, Golden Bloom, Cedarwell) Like Way Out has warm and gritty textures that complement the band’s intense sound.

Front-Cover-228x228His perfectionist taste for noise and melody made Patlingrao a natural choice to produce the EP. The group employed some unconventional recording techniques such as tracking vocals next to a busy street and running tracks through numerous guitar effect pedals. To record Like Way Out, The True Jacqueline and Patlingrao chose to use analog cassettes to sweeten the tonal palette and capture the nostalgia of recording raw basement tapes. The EP was recorded and mixed on a Tascam 688 tape machine which uses regular cassettes but allows eight tracks instead of the usual four. This device informed the process of recording greatly. Punch-ins were impractical and cutting and pasting impossible, so takes were chosen for the overall quality of the performance rather than technical perfection, giving the EP a very genuine feel.

The natural compression of the tape also brings some solidarity to this sonically diverse collection of songs. The band is known for writing outside of genre classifications, and does not align with any specific musical trend or style. Each of the five songs on Like Way Out has a unique statement and grows organically within its own universe. In “Knock Knees” an unusual structure buffets the listener through many moods and rhythms, creating a complex feel to match the song’s emotionally charged lyrical content. The fast pace and intensity of “Cloud Metal” mixed with its soaring melodies and moments of calm evoke a chilling, yet playful aura to compliment its theme of conspiracy theories. The lush guitars that fill “Cookie Dog” fold its psychedelic lyrics into a big, sludgy bed of noise. The tone shifts towards the whimsical and spooky with “Harrington, Forbes, and Gart;” a bouncy melody contrasts the melancholy story of a man whose friends are slowly disappearing. The EP finishes with the guitar-driven “I Can Read”. Blasts of barely controlled feedback scream through freaked out solos and fuzzy bass melodies, intersected by a deep watery bridge, all of which clash with musings about determinism, omniscience, and the nature of reality.

Like Way Out will be self-released and will be available as a digital download or CD from the band’s website www.truejacqueline.com or directly at any of their live shows.
